My beautiful bear named Goldie

Goldie Bear

Goldie Bear

My grandmother gave me a bear when I was three. He had gold coloured fur when I first received him, but is very bare now. I would never go to bed without him, probably the reason he is so threadbare now. He has a few areas where he has begun to get holes in him and I am not sure whether to get him repaired or not. There are no distinguishing marks or tags on him. He has hard sewn on or glued on eyes, sewn on nose (almost gone) and paw marks. He is about 14 1/2 inches or 37 cms tall. His nose and mouth area are raised but not protruding. He was purchased in Australia around 1962. He is most likely an inexpensive bear, but I would not sell him for $1 million. I think he is the most beautiful bear ever, and I've not seen any the same. I would love to know more about him if anyone knows anything. Thank you.

definitely Wendy Boston
by: Teddy Bear Studio

Yes, definitely a Wendy Boston. Wendy made bears after WW2 and had a factory in Wales, UK she, along with her ex RAF pilot husband developed the safety eyes we see in most modern teddy bears. These bears were sold as machine washable and the Hoover company even issued a certificate for adverts saying they could be washed in their machines! The BBC did a spot where Wendy dried her bears through a mangle! This was possible because of the shredded foam stuffing. Please note that this stuffing is not safe today and crumbles to dust: it is highly toxic in this condition so be careful with it.
Whilst your post is a few years old I thought this extra information might be of interest. A lovely, obviously well loved bear.

Thank you Megan

Megan, thank you for your lovely reply. Don't know how I missed it...that was four years ago. It's a lovely story, and is very similar to mine. Dave must have been very loved by your mum. How lucky you are to be given such a beautiful gift. Do you have a photo of Dave? I'd love to see him. All the best. xx Mary

Beautiful bear!
by: Megan

Hi there, I'm Megan and I'm 16.

My mum had one of these bears and passed it onto me, his name is Dave. I've never seen one like him until mum came across this! Like yours, Dave has become a rather bare bear and has had many patches of fur put on from mum, including a new snout (this is flat) because he's been cuddled so much. I don't know about your bear but Dave has been sat down so much that all his stuffing has collected in the bottom, so he's got a rather large rear end and not much to him at the top! We also keep him in a baby grow we found one day to try and keep him somewhat intact, though my grandmother has sewn clothes too.
I'm so happy to have found another precious bear that's survived the times!

Thank You
by: Mary

Thank you to those of you who identified my bear as a Wendy Boston bear. I had never heard of this brand before. I'm pleased to have at least found out that much about him. Anyone willing to post a pic of their Wendy Boston bears? I'd love to see them.
