Antique Swiss Music Box 1930s-1940s Teddy
I bought this teddy at the local antique mall. I've never been an antique bear collector, but the moment I saw this one it made me feel happy. He has definitely been well-loved. According to the antique mall, he is a vintage 1940s teddy bear. His new name is Buttons and we are trying to find out more about him. It would be nice to have an absolute time period as well as a maker for him.
He has amber colored googly eyes. His nose is metal, but we are unsure of whether or not this is the original nose. We are also unsure if the ribbon around his neck is original. It may have been added by the antique shop to attach the price tag.
We opened him up because we thought he had an out of commission grunt box that needed replacing. Instead, we found a disassembled wind-up Swiss made Jaccard music box that plays the tune "Rock a Bye Baby."
The stuffing in the torso and limbs is a mixture of material containing strings, gray fluff, and bits and ends of ribbons. The head is densely stuffed with shredded straw.
In spots where he is less worn we can see that the fur was actually shiny at one point. It is possible he had a tag under his right arm at one point. The stitching appears different here.
My small bit of research in a field I am not familiar with leads me to the following speculation. I thinks its possible he may be a 1930s or 1940s teddy bear produced by Gund.
The things that make me unsure of this are the metal nose, the placement of the eyes in comparison of the nose, the structure of of the nose/mouth area, and the color of the fur. I appreciate any help identifying our Teddy's maker and year.
