Unknown Teddy Bear

two tone teddy bear

two tone teddy bear

I found this teddy in a charity shop and he stood out from the rest so I hope we can identify him somehow by my description.

His fur is quite rough feeling and has a stitched nose that has worn away. His limbs are heavy compared to modern teddies and when squeezed they crack.

His head feels quite solid and has the same cracking sound when pressed. For some reason he has a small hole in the top of his head , managing to get some stuffing out that has a consistency of hay/straw and the eyes are glass.

Coloration of fur is milk chocolate brown with dark brown accents on his ears, paws and feet.

He unfortunately didn't have a tag anywhere on him but would like to have some idea of age and what brand he could possibly be. Either way he is still cute in my eyes. I can take better photos if requested.

Comment
Well he looks like a modern bear. I.e he looks like he has synthetic fur and his design is very modern i.e post 1960's. But you say he has glass eyes and is stuffed with straw or wood wool which is unusual for modern bears. Are you sure that he stuffed with a straw like material rather than a foam? I have a old foam filled 1960's bear and he too cracks and feels heavy.

In fact the whole look of the bear is quite modern and his fur doesn't look that old. Short arms and legs which are quite stumpy with flat paw ends. This is often a style of bear that is made for the mass market and perhaps designed for small children and babies.

Personally I haven’t seen another bear like him so I cannot say what manufacturer made him, sorry.

My Bear
by: Brian S

I have this Bear and he is called Tug.
Had him since I was born in 1963 so like me he is now 60, is rather thin and bald in places , all his arms and legs have been sewn back on over the years and his ribbon disappeared long ago , still has his tongue and eyes though. Has a scar on his stomach where my older brother operated on him !! He still sits on my bedside cabinet and is much loved 😂😂
Whilst visiting a car boot sale last week I found him a twin brother for a whole £1 although he is the same size he is much fatter and hairier so has been well cared for or stored away but so surprised to find one . Great to find out where they came from and they now both sit proudly together 😂😂

I have same teddy bear. My uncle who lived in Berwick on Tweed UK sent it to me in Australia when I was born in 1964. He is the only toy I have kept since a child and other than a frayed ear seam, he is doing well. Karyn.

Unknown Teddy Bear
by: Sheena Clark

I had this bear as a baby/child. I was born in 1963. The hole in the head is where a little loop was. My cousin (similar age) was given a similar bear (I think by the same relative), but hers was darker brown. I would love to have another bear like him. My mum tidied my room and put everything into bags for me to sort out. Being a teenager I was too busy going out with friends to sort through the bags and when bin day came around, everything went out.

I can identify the bear
by: BrianR

I have one exactly like that. It was made by the Shanghai Doll Factory post WW2, probably late 1950s or 1960s. They specialized in teddy bears made of wool with glass eyes and velvet noses, later in the 1970s using plastic noses instead. Yours (and mine) are the less expensive models with no moveable arms or legs. They were widely available in Europe and the UK but much less so in North America. They come in various colours and are highly sought after by arctophiles (teddy bear collectors). Many had a satin ribbon around the neck, but a lot of toddlers ate the ribbon (it was sort of digestible, at least it 'passed') I hope this answers your question.

I still have my Ted,and he means the world to me. He is definitely a 1960s bear, I have had mine since 1966/7. He is from the Shanghai Doll Company. His fur is wool, so please be careful where moths are concerned. A grub created a bare patch under his arm, I killed it by popping Ted in the freezer for a week, it broke my heart but I had to save him.

Long lost Pidge
by: Jacqui

How great to find all these lovely comments about everyone’s love of their "panda" bears...to me mine was always Pidge The Panda ❤️ I had her from being a baby (born 1965) It’s always been my big regret that when leaving a relationship and moving abroad aged 24 that I left her behind. To this day I kind of hope she’ll turn up in a charity shop somewhere. She had a burn mark on her back from where I reached up high as a toddler & stuck her on top of an electric ring on the hob. She always smelled singed! Poor Pidge! She’s much missed...unlike my ex!! 😂

Just dug out Brownie from the cupboard after watching the Repair Shop. He looks slightly to the left from when I sewed his head back on many years ago, and today I fixed his tail back on. A little moth eaten but he’s in pretty good nick overall, must be about 58 years old. Still has his tongue but don’t ever remember a loop on his head. Stuffing is definitely straw-like. Lovely to see so many other people enjoying his siblings!

I had the same bear (Edward) which was taken from the garden when my daughter was playing with it. My grandmother put it in my cot in 1967. I have regularly looked for a replacement and was overjoyed when I found one eBay earlier this year. My new bear (Carlo) is exactly same with his ear leg and arm repaired in the same places. And also a patch on his nose like the old one(where the dog got it) I still wonder if Edward and Carlo are the same bear. It’s really hard to believe he’s almost a pensioner as he’s in quite good condition. ☺️

I too have one of these bears. My dad bought it for me early 1964 when I was ill with the measles.
I remember it was bought for me from an old store, Blacklers in Liverpool, because typically my dad didnt go for a big demonstration and just handed me the bear in a Blacklers bag.
Mine is a very well worn, much loved condition. He has a bald nose and tail and every limb and his head have been sewn back on at some time. He also has a cotton smile as his original one has long gone. But I wouldn't part with him for the world. I named him Johnny, my dad's name and since my dad died he is my constant reminder of him.

by: Gilly mancub

I still have a bear like this.

I was born late 1963 and in 1965 went to I've in Singapore, I have pictures of me with the bear when I am around 3/4 years old. I agree with everything that has been said about this bear.
He had a candy cane pink and white stripe loop which came out of his head, I seem to remember the eyes were darker but my sister cut them out! He did have a small felt pink tongue and was very plush. My bear does not crack and has been washed in the washing machine a couple of times.
I have seen a grey elephant like this in Hamleys toy shop in the 1970,s. My father went to Hong Kong and we also had access to force supplies stores. I Remember it did have Chinese writing on it and I think they also made rabbits in a light shade which were sometimes smaller. I stumbled across this site as I would like my bear to be refurbished so was delighted with the photographs. Unfortunately my sister was jealous of my bear and he has had to have his head and arm sewn back on.

My bear is very similar to the one shown. He's a rather worn (from being so well loved!), so it's hard to say whether mine is a 100% match to the pictures shown.

Bought in Manchester, England in 1967.

Mine is 9.5" tall. The stuffing is bits of saw dust, which gives the bear a 'crunchy' feeling when squeezed.

I vaguely remember the looped string attached to the top of his head.

I'm Italian and I know this bear was sold on the stalls during festivals of the district, I still have my dates from 1975-6. I remember he had a rosette of colorful cartoon I think it's made in hong kong ...

by: Natalie

I am interested in knowing ANYTHING I can about this bear. Anything will help the search! My mother had this exact teddy, her childhood "best friend" stolen a few years ago and I will do just about anything to replace him! If anyone is looking to sell one (or this bear in other colorways , since I know there are a few) I will gladly buy!!! Please e-mail me at natalieandablo10@gmail.com

1960s Bears
by: A J

I now have 3 of this type of bear, the original given to me when I was born, 1965. The original and one other have a label on their side, near the top of the leg, which says 'pure wool' on one side and Chinese letters on the other. They used to have a loop of cotton on the top of their heads.

Could Be Old
by: Anonymous

Your bear is definitely old. I have the same bear and I received it when I was about 2 years old, which is 44 years ago, from my mom. I don't know how old the bear was when I got it, but it is from Germany and mine also doesn't have a tag. I'm almost positive that it contains wood wool, because, like you said, it does crackle a lot when you squeeze it. Check the eyes on your bear, if their glass, your bear is pre 1950s, if their plastic, its post 1950s because they started producing bears with plastic eyes then. Also, your bear has a hole in the top of its head, because their used to be a loop there to hang it from something. I would suggest getting it stitched, professionally if possible. But, unfortunately, your bear is supposed to have a small red fabric tongue stitched to his mouth, so he looks like he's sticking his tongue out at you. Other then that, if the eyes are glass, your bear is very old.

Sincerely,
- C.

Stuffing
by: Charlotte (the bears owner)

Like I said his stuffing is straw like as I managed to get some out of the hole in his head - definitely not foam.
It's quite hard to judge him without seeing him in person :S
