Tiny Teddy

Tiny Teddy

I was recently given this bear by a friend - it had belonged to his elderly mother who recently passed away. I was helping him to sort out her belongings when this little bear caught my eye. He is just 7 cms tall and his arms legs and head are all jointed, and able to turn 360 degrees.

He has been loved - his fur is rubbed away on his tummy, feet and tops of his ears. Also his nose isn’t as black as it probably once was as the stitching has worn away. His eyes are like two matt black beads. He is solid - there is no stuffing inside him - he is quite hard to the touch. There are no labels on him.

I would love to know more about my little bear, so hope that someone gets in touch.

I have 2 like yours.
by: Rosamund Tomlins

My 2 were bought for me from Hamley's in about 1974/5/6, as a reward for something. I chose 2 to keep each other company, from a box beside the till in the toy department. Initially I found it hard to tell the difference between the two and I remember the sales lady finding this surprising, but she saw them every day. Then, the only difference I could see was in the size of their noses. Very quickly though I could see the individual characters in their faces and I decided which was a girl & which was a boy. One of the 'male' one's ear fell off with handling, & yes, it had been fixed on with metal plates with sharp edges! No wonder others have reported that they were withdrawn from sale. Unfortunately, I kept the ear in a small purse with a limited edition coin, & years later when I found it again, all the hair had rubbed off - against the coin, I presume, as the rest of the bear is fine. Glad to know that others have survived.

I've got this bear
Libertys of London sold it in 1972 -1973 they were taken off sale because they were metal in side and the ears have metal spikes on them.
They weren't on sale long because I bought the bear on the Wednesday went back to get the panda on the Thursday and they had been pulled off sale.

Schuco bear
by: Isobel

Hello there, sorry to hear your little bear was stolen! But interesting to know they were around in the 70s. I guess mine must be about 50 years old then. Hope you manage to find another one.

Me too
by: 4m4nd4

I have one of these bears also. My Mum bought it from the Hamleys catalogue back in the early 70s. He’s in excellent condition because I liked my other one more. He was a lighter colour and was stolen by the daughter of my mum’s friend. I have been looking to add to my little bear but without success. It’s good to know there are cherished mini teds in the world

Thankyou Maggie, he does have a metal body (or at least I can see he has a metal neck), so I think my mystery is now solved. Though it would be interesting to know how old he is if anyone has any idea?

Schuco!
by: Maggie

It's quite certainly a Schuco bear. They sere quite famous for miniature bears and mechanical bears. You might find it has a metal body. That would also speak for Schuco.

Hi Sarah, thankyou for this - I think mine is just a much loved teddy bear too - and will continue to be so! I’m so grateful for the information I’ve received on here as I didn’t know anything about Schuco bears before.

Schuco bear

He looks like one of my Schuco bears. They weren't all perfume bottles. My three are just much loved teddies! I got my first around 1970/71 - think it came from Hamley's and the last was bought for me at auction.

Thankyou Maureen

That’s very interesting, thankyou. My bear does look as if he has a metal neck and it could be a container of some sort, but his head won’t come off! I don’t want to injure him so I’ll research more Schuco bears. Thanks again. Isobel

Hi, your miniature bear appears to be a schuco bear.

I'm not saying pull his head off but some do have a perfume bottle inside.
You probably can check by turning his head carefully
